Miguel Ángel Juan and María García de la Cruz, winners of the Tour of Almería

The Tour of Almeria has finished this Sunday after two intense days of cycling through different parts of the province of Almería, with 200 riders registered who have given shine to the eighth edition of the race, the most important in amateur cycling in stages in the southern half of the country, and which has had as final winners Miguel Ángel Juan (Hemón-RTE Benabent) and María García de la Cruz (Bicicletas Km 0).

Miguel Ángel Juan was the best in Saturday’s finish in Los Gallardos within a group of eleven riders who arrived with options to the last moments of the route, which crossed different points of the Levante Almeriense region, passing through Las Alparatas, the crossings of La Simona and the Port of Garrucha, La Buganvillas, Puerto Rey, Villaricos, Deretil, Pozo del Esparto, Mar de Pulpí, Alto de la Geoda, Pulpí, Guazamara, Cuevas del Almanzora, El Real and Antas, before returning to Los Gallardos, main protagonist for the first time in the Vuelta a Almería coinciding with the celebration in 2024 of its centenary as a municipality.

With very small distances between the first classified, the excitement was left for the second day, starting in Albox and finishing in the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Saliente, also within the municipality of Albojense, after 108 kilometres that would take the cyclists through different points of the regions of the Almanzora Valley and Filabres-Tabernas as Arboleas, Zurgena, Rambla Aljibe, Alto de Lubrín, Uleila del Campo, Cerro de la Virgen, Albanchez, Almanzora and La Molata.

On this occasion there were seven cyclists who came to the last metres to play for the victory. The one who gained a few metres was Nicolás Mercader, who entered the Sanctuary as the winner. He had been second the previous day, three seconds behind Miguel Ángel Juan, but at the top of the Albojense he could only manage one second less.

Miguel Ángel Juan (Hemón-RTE Benabent) was thus the overall winner, with a meagre two-second advantage over Nicolás Mercader (Vellsam Team). Manuel Maestra (CC Juan Zurano-Brócoli Mecánico Sakata), last year’s winner, closed the podium, also with a very small gap of four seconds over the winner.

As for the women’s classification, the victory on both days went to María García de la Cruz (Bicicletas Km 0), in both cases, and therefore also in the overall classification, ahead of Ana Isabel Morales (Dr. Bike), with María del Mar Galindo (PC La Cañá) third.

Among the authorities who have been present throughout both days are the mayor of Los Gallardos, Francisco Reyes; the mayoress of Albox, María del Mar Alfonso; the territorial delegate of Rural Development of the Junta de Andalucía, Antonio Mena; the provincial deputy Ana Lourdes Ramírez; the managers of Hyundai Almerialva, María José Fernández and Asier Arrizabalaga; the CEO of Total Sport Mediterranean, Sergio Domínguez, as well as councillors of the government teams of Los Gallardos and Albox and other sponsoring companies.

The Vuelta Ciclista a Almería 2024, a reference event for amateur cycling in Andalusia, organised by Total Sport Mediterranean and the Club Deportivo A Toda Marcha, has had the institutional sponsorship of the town councils of Los Gallardos and Albox as well as the Diputación Provincial de Almería, Electrohidráulica SP-Palfinger, López Urrutia Montajes Eléctricos y Climatización, and Urci Hormigones, Hyundai Almerialva as official vehicle, as well as Hemón Cycling Company, who dressed the leaders of the different classifications, have also been the main sponsors. The town councils of Albanchez, Arboleas, Cantoria, Pulpí and Zurgena have also collaborated, as well as Almesu, Almericar, Autocares Rodríguez, Coca-Cola, Guardia Civil, Guardia Civil de Tráfico.
