Eleven centres in Almeria participate in the Social Mentoring programme.

A total of 11 schools in the province of Almeria located in the Andalusian Regional Strategy for Social Cohesion and Inclusion (ERACIS) areas are participating this year in the third edition of the Social Mentoring programme “Fénix Andalucía” of the Regional Ministry of Educational Development and Vocational Training, which aims to increase the academic motivation of children in areas of social exclusion and to achieve school success.

The delegate of Educational Development, Vocational Training, University, Research and Innovation, Francisco Alonso Martínez, has participated along with the ‘inspirational mentors’, the Sevillian filmmaker and Goya Award winner Gervasio Iglesia, the teacher and renowned mathematics educator Clara Grima and former Unicaja Spanish basketball player Berni Rodríguez in a provincial meeting of the programme that took place in the Francisco Villaespesa Public Library of the capital.

Alonso shared a day of dialogue and reflection with the participating schools, teachers, the 300 students who benefit from the programme and area mentors on the importance of personal growth and the acquisition of skills such as resilience in the training process. In addition, the students were able to discuss and learn about the professional careers of the ‘inspirational mentors’.

In his speech, the delegate highlighted the importance of attention to diversity and individual differences in the framework of the education system and stressed that “guaranteeing educational inclusion, personalised attention to students and their learning needs, is one of the main objectives of the Regional Ministry of Educational Development and Vocational Training”.

In this sense, Alonso pointed out that ‘Fénix Andalucía’ Social Mentoring goes far beyond the visits or interventions of relevant people for their professional success in schools, as it includes training, materials and resources that exponentially expand the impact that the development of the programme can have in these areas.

The Programme proposes the establishment of social mentoring at the service of inclusion, social cohesion and equal opportunities for the most vulnerable groups, with a clear intention to motivate personal development. Thus, it aims to foster values such as resilience, self-improvement, respect, equality and teamwork in children with socio-economic difficulties and diverse aptitudes.

To this end, the schools will have the direct support of the “area mentors” and the visit to the school of the “inspirational mentors”. In addition, the schools will have at their disposal the teaching materials, training through the virtual classroom for teacher training and specific advice necessary for the implementation of the Programme.

This initiative launched by the Regional Ministry of Educational Development and Vocational Training is aimed at publicly funded schools that teach 5th and 6th year Primary Education or 1st and 2nd year Compulsory Secondary Education and are located in ERACIS areas or have Educational Compensation Plans.

The participating schools in the province of Almeria are the Infant and Primary schools San Nicolás (Adra), Punta Entinas (Pampanico), Juan Sebastián El Cano (San Isidro de Níjar), Fuensatilla (Almería) and the secondary schools Albaida (Almería), San Isidro (Níjar), Turaniana (Roquetas de Mar), Galileo (Almería), Sol de Portocarrero (Almería), Algazul (Roquetas de Mar) and Santa María del Águila (El Ejido).
