From July 25 to 27, the Aben Humeya Moorish Games will be held in Purchena, “the missing link in the chain of Olympicism” in the words of Juan Antonio Samaranch, who was president of the International Olympic Committee until 2001.
The Purchena Moorish Games are an original and unique sporting event in our autonomous community, where they are declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia. Every two years, they are celebrated in the town of Purchena, a town that on the dates indicated, revives the year 1569, when the king of the Moors Aben Humeya called for sporting and cultural games, popularly known as “The Moorish Games”, described by the chronicler Ginés Pérez de Hita, and among which we highlight the lifting of the “Burxana” 68 kilo marble stone, holding bricks, triple jump, archery or throwing songs.
For Isidro Pedrosa, Councilor for Celebrations of the Purchenero municipality, “it is an identity festival that reflects the Moorish legacy in our municipality and that the neighbors live intensely. We have some surprises prepared for this year, with the intention that not only the Purcheneros, but also the residents of the Almanzora region and the province, can celebrate them with great enthusiasm.”

On Wednesday, July 11, the XXII Edition of the Moorish Games is scheduled to debut at the Provincial Council
