Provincial Council approves more than 7.4 million to invest in municipalities

The Plenary Session of the Provincial Council has approved more than 7 million euros for investments in municipalities in the province of Almería. The deputies have given their ‘ok’ to the Economic Assistance Plan and to other important investment packages that aim to equalise opportunities for all the people of Almería. In addition, the green light has been given to a new regulation of honours and distinctions that includes the Medal of Agriculture and the Urban Agendas of the province have been approved. 

Vice President Fernando Giménez stressed that in the plenary session “we have approved investments worth 7.4 million to bring services to all municipalities in the province, as an institution that guarantees equal opportunities in the 103 municipalities.” 

Giménez also recalled that “the Urban Agendas of the province have been approved as strategies to obtain European funds with projects that structure the regions and the Medal for Agriculture, as a significant nod that highlights the great value that agriculture has as an economic pillar of the province.” 

Firstly, the Plenary has approved more than 3.8 million euros of direct aid to the municipalities for the implementation of projects that will allow them to transform their urban centres, as well as guarantee basic services to the residents of the 103 municipalities. Among the planned actions, there are subsidies for the execution of urbanisation works, water supply, cemetery extensions and also aid of a social and cultural nature. 

Among these, the most notable are the construction of a new branch at the Glorieta de la Avenida de América in Albox; the improvement of access to Olula el Río, two new parks in Alcóntar and Garrucha, as well as more than €260,000 for water works and the direct subsidy for the maintenance of one of the main cultural and artistic resources of the interior: the Museo Casa Ibáñez. 

On the other hand, the deputies have given the go-ahead to 1.3 million euros of provincial investments, charged to the Provincial Plans, for the execution of the project ‘Urbanizations in Cuevas del Almanzora and its districts’. These actions that will reach this municipality of the Levante are co-financed by the Provincial Council and the City Council.

Economic Assistance Plan 2024 

Likewise, the plenary session approved the 2024 Economic Assistance Plan, which will allow municipalities to receive more than 2.2 million euros to finance municipal investments, activities and services. In this way, the distribution of aid and capital transfers carried out by the different areas of the Provincial Institution is planned. 

These grants are distributed as follows: 

  • Financial assistance for investments in municipal services aimed at local entities with a population of 1,000 or less
    • Total amount: €1,040,000
  • Municipal Equality Actions, Actions for the Promotion of Women’s Employment and Community Social Services Projects.
    • Total amount: €532,350
  • Call for salary costs for Cultural Promoters and the Circuit to Support Almería Culture
    • Total amount: €173,250
  • Financial assistance for the provision of electronic administration services
    • Total amount: €200,000
    • Sports and Cultural Promoters
    • Hiring of Sports Technical Services
    • Acquisition of inventoried sports equipment
    • Unique Sporting Events
    • Municipal Sports Activities
      • Total amount: €328,221

New Medal for Agriculture

During this morning’s plenary session, the update of the Regulations on Honours and Distinctions of the Provincial Council of Almería was approved with the creation of the Medal for Agriculture, which will be added to the Medals that are awarded on the Day of the Province in homage to a sector that is an economic mainstay in the province. 

The original regulations have not been modified since 1998 and have been updated with this distinction and with new concepts such as illustrious visitor, adopted son and favourite son, illustrious visitor and honorary official. 

Green light for the Urban Agendas of the regions

Likewise, the Provincial Council has approved the Functional Urban Agendas for the Metropolitan Area of ​​Almería, Levante, Almanzora, Poniente – El Ejido and Poniente – Roquetas. This document is a tool to make transformative and strategic projects for the regions possible.  

The approval of these documents represents a new step towards drawing up a strategy to raise European funds to continue transforming the municipalities that make up these areas of the province.

The Urban Agenda is a non-binding strategic document that sets out the strategy and actions until 2030 to make these municipalities more friendly, healthy and safe spaces for coexistence.

Following approval, a consultancy firm will conduct a comprehensive analysis of the opportunities available for accessing the call for territorial projects to support Urban Development through ERDF funds.

Boosting sporting events with €96,000 in direct aid

On the other hand, the Plenary Session of the Provincial Council has approved a package of €96,000 in direct aid for the financing of sporting events that contribute to the promotion of sport and the ‘Costa de Almería’ destination linked to sports tourism.
