More than two hundred people (among them various institutional and political representatives, such as the mayor of Baza, Pedro Ramos) have come to the old Baza station to the protest rally organized by the railway and business groups of Baza, Guadix and Valle del Almanzora. An event against the previous report published by the Ministry of Transport and which considers the reopening of the Guadix Baza Almanzora Lorca railway line to be “economically unviable”. Under the slogan “Minister, you are wrong; the Guadix Baza Almanzora Lorca train CAN and MUST return” the calling groups have expressed their disappointment and anger both with a report that they consider “so erroneous and misleading that it does not take this line into account within the scope of the Mediterranean Corridor”, as well as with the political representatives of the area who have not been involved in this important project with particular mention to the Delegate of the Government of Spain in Andalusia, Pedro Fernández from Baza, say the organizers through a press release.
Antonio Francisco Martínez, president of the Asociación Amigos del Ferrocarril Comarca de Baza, said, “If it is not enough to show the Government that the return of the train is viable and even profitable, today we are beginning a new stage where we do not want more motions, declarations or fine words, but concrete actions and much greater social support from the citizens of these regions.” Eduardo Jiménez, from Comarca de Guadix por el Tren, José Antonio Barrera, from the Plataforma Almeriense por el tren público, and Pilar Quesada, from the Asociación de Empresarios del Altiplano de Granada, also spoke.
The rally ended with the announcement of upcoming demonstrations in Granada and Madrid.
