On March 8 and 9, the recovery of irrigation ditches will take place in the district of Los Cerricos in the municipality of Oria. The activity is organized by the Biocultural Archeology Laboratory (MEMOLab UGR), coordinated by Professor Dr. José María Martín Civantos, from the Department of Medieval History and CCTTHH of the UGR. In collaboration with the Oria City Council, the Los Cerricos Festival Commission, the Nueva Aventura CD of Oria, the Oria Verde Association and the Historical Ditches Association.
Three irrigation ditches of medieval origin will be recovered that are supplied by two ponds: the Nueva pond and the Zarcica pond. It is a space that has been abandoned for more than 40 years and, after its recovery, a landscape of great cultural, historical, agrarian and environmental value will also be recovered. It is a mid-slope area, close to the Peñón de la Cruz pine forest with a rich biodiversity in fauna and flora, with daily sightings of golden eagles, eagle owls and native fauna. This is an activity open to the participation of any interested person. More than 80 volunteers will attend.
This activity is part of the initiatives within MEMOLab UGR to recover and enhance historical irrigation systems, as well as support local irrigation communities.
