The regional government gives the green light through the Waste Consortium to the drafting of the project for the future bio-waste plant in San Javier.

The future plant will have an investment of more than 3.3 million euros, of which the regional government is contributing 2.4 million euros.

The design of the future plant in San Javier for the treatment of biodegradable organic waste of domestic origin will begin at the beginning of 2024 with the start of the drafting of the project for this facility, which will allow the management of waste collected through the future fifth container, known as the brown container.

This has been endorsed by the regional government, through the Waste Consortium of the Region of Murcia, in the telematic meeting of the Government Commission, in which the contract to draw up the project was awarded. For its construction, valued at 3.3 million euros, the regional government will provide more than 2.4 million from European funds, while the rest of the amount corresponds to the Waste Consortium.

This facility will be part of the infrastructure network designed to ensure that the municipalities belonging to the Consortium can access the recovery of organic matter by converting it into compost.

The facility will treat almost 20,000 tonnes of bio-waste per year, collected from the brown bin, and will serve 155,283 inhabitants of six municipalities.

To this end, the Community and local councils are working hand in hand to create a network of collection, differentiated from organic matter through the brown bin, and treatment. The Community collaborates in this municipal competence by making the necessary means available to the local authorities.

The facility will be located in San Javier, thanks to the transfer of a plot of land from the City Council to the Consortium and will serve 155,283 inhabitants of six municipalities (San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, Los Alcázares, Torre Pacheco, Fuente Álamo and La Unión). It will have the capacity to treat up to 19,330 tonnes per year of organic matter collected in the brown container.

This container will collect fruit and vegetable waste, cooked meat, fish and seafood waste, dried fruit and nuts, tea, coffee grounds, eggshells and other food waste, cork stoppers, matches, sawdust, used napkins, dirty kitchen paper and paper and cardboard soiled with oil or food waste, as well as small pruning or gardening waste such as plants, leaves or bunches of flowers.
