A woman died and 13 people were injured when a lorry overturned on a workers’ bus in Lorca

One woman is dead and 13 people injured when a lorry overturned on a bus carrying workers on the road between Lorca (Murcia) and Pulpí (Almería), on the Las Escarihuelas exit bridge, in the municipality of Lorca.

The 061 medical service reported that one person had died and 13 people had been treated and taken to a medical centre, including the driver of the lorry, according to sources from the Emergency Coordination Centre consulted by Europa Press. There were 18 people on the bus, including the driver, who was unharmed.

Specifically, 12 people were taken to the Rafael Méndez Hospital in Lorca and one to the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia.

Those involved in the accident, who live in the Region of Murcia, were returning home after a day’s work at the agricultural trading company where they work in Pulpí (Almería), according to statements made to Europa Press by the mayor of the town, Juan Pedro García, who expressed his condolences to the relatives of the fatal victim.

At 12.35 hours, the Emergency Coordination Centre of the Region of Murcia received several calls reporting the accident. The callers indicated that several people were trapped and injured as a result of a lorry carrying plastics overturning on the bus.

Firefighters from the Consorcio de Extinción de Incendios y Salvamento de la Región de Murcia (CEIS), six ambulances from the Gerencia de Urgencias y Emergencias Sanitarias 061, the Guardia Civil, road maintenance service personnel, the inspector of Occupational Health and Safety and emergency services and Civil Protection of Lorca were on the scene of the accident.

The Guardia Civil reported that it was a bus with workers on its way to Lorca. Medical staff worked in the area to stabilise and transfer the injured, once the CEIS firefighters had managed to free them.
