This Saturday, the municipality of Oria hosted an emotional ceremony in which a large number of local residents, accompanied by the provincial deputies, Antonio Jesús Rodríguez and Conce Pérez, by the Delegate for Health, Juan de la Cruz Belmonte, and the Mayor of the town, Marcos Reche, paid tribute to the First Civil Guard, José Romero García, a native of the town who died in the line of duty 30 years ago in the municipality of Fines.
The Town Council of Oria wanted to pay a heartfelt tribute to him with the inauguration of a square named after the deceased officer and also attended by numerous Civil Guards led by the head colonel of the Command of the Civil Guard of Almeria, Jorge Montero, and relatives of José Romero García, who thanked all attendees for accompanying them in this special moment.
The Mayor of the town, Marcos Reche, conveyed the affection of all the neighbours to the family of José Romero García, and thanked the Guardia Civil of Almería for their collaboration in making this act a reality today. Reche also had words of affection for the work of this man from Orialo who died in the line of duty and who is remembered by all the neighbours who knew him and who feel «happy and proud of how loved and good a person he always was».
For his part, the head colonel of the command of the Guardia Civil de Almería, Jorge Montero, recalled the impeccable career of José Romero, First Civil Guard whose life was cut short when he was 40 years old when he was shot twice in Fines, when he was in the company of his brothers, an event that had a profound impact on the entire region of Almanzora.
The chief colonel explained that at the Guardia Civil Command in Almería there is a monolith with the names of all the officers who have unfortunately died in the line of duty in the last 70 years and asked the Virgen del Pilar, patron saint of the Guardia Civil, that no more names should be inscribed on this monument.
