Tíjola was at the centre of the events held in the province of Almería on the International Day against Violence against Women.
The town has the sad distinction of being the only municipality in the province where a woman was killed by her husband. The woman was Maite Corral, who was found dead in her home on 28 May by one of her sons.
This morning and in the midst of the family’s grief, a children’s playground bearing her name was inaugurated after the screening of a documentary to the students of the Sagrado Corazón Public School and the IES Alto Almanzora which ended in a formative and informative exchange so that the children can be aware when they are faced with a situation of violence, which is not only physical and which begins with control and isolation.
Afterwards there was a march to the playground named after Maite Corral, with the presence of family, friends, colleagues, local authorities and the president of the Provincial Council, Javier Aureliano García.

The Mayor of Tíjola, José Juan Martínez, has conveyed to the family the unanimous support of all the neighbours and has pledged to continue fighting from the local administration to eradicate gender violence.
The councillor recalled the «permanent smile» of Maite Corral and the «affection» with which she always treated all the residents of the region and pointed out that «her memory will always remain with us».
For his part, the President of the Provincial Council has highlighted the need to educate in equality and has pledged to continue working from the provincial institution to put an end to a scourge that in recent years has left more victims even than those caused by the terrorist group ETA.
Javier A. García highlighted the affection that the whole of the Almanzora region felt for Maite Corral, a person known in all the municipalities for the work she carried out for years in the Andalusian Employment Service and whom «we will always remember and carry in our hearts».
Finally, the Deputy for Equality, Nuria Rodríguez, read the manifesto drawn up by the Provincial Councils of Andalusia, in which full equality between men and women was demanded and the total eradication of gender violence was advocated.
