The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia detected a vehicle travelling at 191 kilometres per hour on the road to La Manga (RM-12), in the municipality of Cartagena, when the maximum speed of the road is 100 kilometres per hour. For this reason, the driver of the vehicle, after being located, has been investigated and proceedings have been opened against him as the alleged perpetrator of an offence against road safety, for exceeding the maximum permitted speed limit by more than 80 kilometres per hour.
The events took place on the RM-12 dual carriageway, which joins the AP-7 at Los Beatos with La Manga del Mar Menor, in the municipality of Cartagena, while the civil guards of the Cartagena Traffic Detachment, who were carrying out a static speed control, detected a high-end sports car travelling at 191 kilometres per hour on a stretch of road limited to 100 kilometres per hour, thereby exceeding the maximum permitted speed by 91 kilometres per hour.
At that moment, as it was a static speed point, the driver could not be stopped or identified, although the Guardia Civil immediately started to follow the vehicle in order to proceed at that moment to arrest it, according to sources of the Armed Institute in a communiqué.

The Attestations Team of the Traffic Detachment of Cartagena joined the search for the vehicle related to the offence, for the continuation of the criminal proceedings to locate, identify and notify the alleged perpetrator of the crime against road safety, for speeding.
A few hours later, the investigation carried out by the Civil Guards of the Traffic Unit led to a positive result, when the whereabouts of the vehicle were located and the driver involved in the offence was identified.
The driver was investigated and proceedings were instituted against him as the alleged perpetrator of an offence against road safety – for driving a motor vehicle at a speed of 80 kilometres per hour over the legal speed limit on interurban roads – and he was subsequently placed at the disposal of the Cartagena (Murcia) Court of Instruction for the corresponding trial to be held. The vehicle related to the criminal offence was immobilised and placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority.
The Guardia Civil recalled that this offence is included in article 379 of the Penal Code and can be punished alternatively with prison sentences of 3 to 6 months, a fine of 6 to 12 months, or community service of 31 to 90 days, and in any case, with deprivation of the right to drive motor vehicles and mopeds for a period of more than 1 to 4 years.
The establishment of speed controls by the Traffic Grouping of the Civil Guard is part of the objectives of the Road Safety Strategy adopted by the DGT for the decade 2021-2030, as one of the priorities aimed at reducing the accident rate on our roads, especially on conventional or secondary roads.
All this, adds the Benemérita, «taking into account that speeding, on the one hand, considerably increases the risk of traffic accidents, and on the other hand are factors that directly affect mortality and the severity of the injuries suffered».
In this sense, the Traffic Sector of the Civil Guard in Murcia recalls that it continues to develop its specific road safety surveillance activity 24 hours a day, especially in those activities of greater risk, as in this case speeding, or others such as driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
It also monitors risky activities such as distractions while driving, the use of mobile phones and the use of safety elements (seat belts, child restraint systems or protective helmets), especially in those stretches and points of road which, due to their special characteristics, imply a risk of accidents or are prone to committing this type of offence, appealing to drivers to be aware of the importance of respecting the established speed limits and strictly complying with traffic regulations, in order to improve their own safety and that of traffic in general.
