The Guardia Civil has investigated the driver of a car who drove more than six kilometres in the wrong direction on the Mediterranean motorway and who, in addition, did not have a driving licence and tested positive in a first test for drug use, according to sources from the Benemérita in a statement.

The investigation began in the early hours of the morning of 30 March, when the Traffic Operations Centre (COTA) of the Traffic Sector of the Civil Guard in Murcia became aware of a traffic accident at kilometre 801.900 of the AP-7 motorway (Crevillente-Vera section), in which two vehicles were involved.

Civil Guards from the Cartagena Traffic Detachment went to the scene and verified that the accident had consisted of a head-on collision between two cars, in which a 58-year-old woman driver from San Javier was slightly injured, while the other vehicle involved in the accident, which was travelling in the opposite direction, had left the scene moments after causing the accident.

Shortly after the first accident, another call alerted the Guardia Civil to a new accident near Venta San José, in Cartagena, involving the collision of a car of the same make and model, also travelling in the opposite direction, with another car driven by a 63-year-old woman from Cabo de Palos, who was slightly injured.

The search for the getaway driver proved positive as, due to structural damage to the bodywork of the vehicle, he was unable to continue driving and stopped. The driver – a 43-year-old Moroccan citizen from Los Alcázares – was subjected to the mandatory tests and tested positive for THC.

In accordance with the established procedure, a saliva sample was obtained from her and sent to an accredited reference laboratory, contracted by the Directorate General of Traffic, to verify the first provisional indicative result of the presence of drugs in her body.

Investigations revealed that the driver had made an illegal change of direction and had driven for almost seven kilometres in the wrong direction, towards Alicante, in the lanes established for the direction of Vera (Almeria).

For all these reasons, the woman was investigated as the alleged perpetrator of crimes against road safety, for reckless driving, lack of driving licence, leaving the scene of the accident and injuries due to recklessness.

The person under investigation and the proceedings were handed over to the 2nd Examining Magistrate’s Court in Cartagena.
