Several calls to the Local Police 092 telephone number alerted at around 20:30 about containers on fire in the streets of Ciudad Jardín: Carmen Conde and Antonio Oliver. Fire crews from the Cartagena City Council were also called to the scene. Witnesses informed the officers that minutes before they had observed a man in Almirante Baldasano street trying to start a fire with a lighter in a container.
The 31-year-old arrested man was brought before a judge.
Local Police began the search for the possible perpetrator, when they again received information about other rubbish containers on fire in Trafalgar street and in Poeta Miguel Hernández street, where the fire was also affecting a parked vehicle. The fire brigade put out the fire in several rubbish containers, which were destroyed.

When the municipal police officers were in the area in Poeta Miguel Hernández street, they observed that in an establishment located in front of the burnt rubbish container, there was an individual watching the fire.
