This week, the General Directorate of Traffic is carrying out a surveillance and control campaign on the roads of Almería that will continue on Sunday to discourage driving after consuming alcohol and/or drugs, with the aim of reducing the level of risk when travelling after participating in the usual family and friends gatherings where alcohol is usually present.
The deputy government delegate in Almería, José María Martín, accompanied by the provincial head of Traffic, José María Méndez, have visited one of the controls carried out by the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard of Almería where he has asked for «great caution and care at the wheel». During the campaign carried out last year, 3,209 breathalyzer tests were carried out with 54 positives and 39 drug tests with 26 positives. In light of these data, the deputy delegate has pointed out that «I would like to remember that the consumption of these substances continues to be year after year one of the three main risk factors in traffic accidents, both in fatal accidents and in accidents with victims, being present in 13% of traffic accidents with victims in 2023 and, as a concurrent factor, in 26% in which fatalities were recorded».
For his part, José María Méndez explained the characteristics of this special campaign in which agents from the Local Police of the municipalities of Almería collaborate, who have devices to carry out controls, and he insisted on the importance of not consuming alcohol or drugs and maintaining responsible behaviour and maximum respect for traffic regulations. Méndez pointed out that “with this campaign we want to show that we have zero tolerance against this type of consumption, so we are going to intensify controls at any time and in any place.”
